What exactly is Hospitality?
Hospitality covers work in hotels, holiday accommodation, pubs, restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs and is one of the largest industries in the country. There are many different job roles available, all of which centre around being able to deliver high levels of customer service. The main ones include waiting, bar service, reception and housekeeping. Employers will be looking to see that you can work as part of a team and have a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
What’s it like working in Hospitality?
With a total of 180,000 hospitality businesses in the UK, the industry offers variety. You could start a career in a multimillion pound business that employs thousands of people nationwide, find yourself in an intimate family-run business, or travel the world – the possibilities are endless. It’s a vibrant, fast-paced environment, where every day will be different and challenging. Hours are likely to involve early mornings and/or late nights depending on where you work. You can also expect to cover weekends and public holidays. Hospitality is more than just a job, it can offer a rewarding career and there are fantastic opportunities for passionate, hard-working people. Successful completion of qualifications can lead to fast career progression into supervisory and management roles.
What can I expect to earn?
  • Full-time salaries for waiting staff can be around £12,000 to £16,000 a year. With experience and extra responsibilities it’s possible to earn between £17,000 and £20,000.
  • Many waiters and waitresses are paid by the hour. Income may be increased by tips.
