Adventurous Voyage: HTP Students Shine on Tenacity of Bolton

Friday

The morning of Friday 4th October was brimming with excitement as students from Sports Coaching (Outdoors), Travel and Tourism, and Skills for an Active Life geared up for their adventure aboard the Tenacity of Bolton.

By 9 am, the anticipation was palpable as the eager learners met Captain Giles and First Mate Alex at Cowes Marina, ready to embark on their maritime journey.

Upon boarding, the crew quickly organized themselves, assigning sleeping quarters and dividing into Port and Starboard teams to manage the boat’s operations. After a swift briefing and a hearty lunch, the students dove into hands-on sailing training. Despite only a few having prior sailing experience, everyone quickly mastered sheeting in, winching lines, and maneuvering the tiller to execute tacks. By evening, each participant had taken a turn at helming the Tenacity of Bolton, earning their stripes and preparing for the challenges ahead.

Saturday

Race day, and the excitement reached new heights! The fleet, adorned with colorful flags and creative decorations, paraded past the Royal Squadron in a lively procession. Captain Giles outlined the race route: Cowes to Portsmouth, turning at Ryde towards Southampton, then onto Newtown Creek, and finally back to Cowes.

The competition was fierce, with sixteen boats navigating the Solent’s markers under varying winds. The students showcased their teamwork and resilience, maintaining their roles with urgency and precision.

As the race progressed, the physical demands and serene moments at sea revealed the crew’s adaptability. Despite some moments of rest, everyone remained ready for action. The final leg presented a tough challenge against the tide and gusty winds, but the Tenacity of Bolton held strong, crossing the finish line triumphantly.

At the awards ceremony, the crew’s hard work was rewarded with second place in their class and seventh overall—a remarkable achievement, especially considering their limited sailing experience. Ellie, the team’s spirited energy bundle, proudly collected the prize: a dry bay and waterproof phone case, sparking cheers and smiles all around.

Sunday

Sunday offered a relaxed conclusion to the adventure. After thoroughly cleaning the boat and a debrief with Captain Giles, it was clear that the team had exceeded expectations. On the journey back to HTP, conversations buzzed with excitement about future courses and opportunities to join next year’s voyage.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Tall Ships for providing such an unforgettable experience and to all the young sailors for their dedication and enthusiasm. This adventure not only strengthened their sailing skills but also fostered teamwork and resilience, leaving everyone eager for the next voyage on the Tenacity of Bolton.
