For New Apprentices

If you are aged 19 or older when starting your Apprenticeship:

• You are not required to study for English and Maths qualifications unless you and your employer decide it is beneficial.
• If you choose to study English and Maths, HTP will provide the training, and you must undertake the assessment.
• Not achieving English and Maths will not prevent you from completing your Apprenticeship or progressing to your End-Point Assessment (EPA).
• If you and your employer opt-in, the Government will still fund your training in these subjects.

If you are aged 16-18 when starting your Apprenticeship:

• your Apprenticeship requirements remain the same, and you will still need to meet the existing English and Maths criteria to complete your programme.

For Employers

The government has removed the requirement for 19+ apprentices to have or need to achieve English and Maths to complete their Apprenticeship programme. However, there is flexibility if you believe these skills are relevant for your apprentice’s role.

Key points for employers:

• You and your apprentice can choose whether they will undertake English and Maths training – it is no longer compulsory.
• If agreed upon, HTP will provide the necessary training, and apprentices must attempt the assessment.
• The Government will continue funding English and Maths training for 19+ apprentices who opt-in.
