Apprenticeship scheme is the way forward for Island nursery
Linda Harrop, Team Leader at Shalfleet Little Explorers was recruiting a new Childcare assistant for the nursery and she ideally wanted someone who had already completed the Level 3 Child Care and Education qualification. Unfortunately the quality of applications she was receiving lacked the ‘wow factor’ she was looking for. Little did she know that the solution to her problem was undertaking work experience next door at Shalfleet Primary School.
Jaimee Fallows had completed her A-Levels and rather than going to university, she had decided that she wanted to gain employment and start her career. Jaimee was undertaking her Level 2 Diploma in Childcare at HTP and was going to the school for work experience as part of her training programme. The Head teacher recommended Jaimee to Linda as she could see great potential in her.
Little Explorers were keen to find the right member of staff who could be a permanent member of the team rather than just a short-term solution, but hadn’t considered taking on an Apprentice before. Linda interviewed Jaimee and felt her attitude and maturity was exceptional for a young person of her age.
Little Explorer’s took advantage of the AGE Grant, a £1500 incentive offered by the Government to encourage businesses to take on apprentices. This was invaluable for the business and helped support the wage costs of their new member of staff.
Linda says, “The sector really does need to invest in young people to ensure we continue to provide high quality childcare. I strongly believe that the students gain much more by learning in the workplace rather than in the classroom. Our experience of recruiting someone who has a Level 2 qualification and wants to commence an Advanced Apprenticeship has been so positive that we have made the strategic decision that we will recruit apprentices in the future as our way of developing new talent. I would strongly recommend other childcare providers to do the same.”
