Helen Farley: Health & Social Care

“Do what you love, not what you’re told to love”

How did you get involved in teaching Health & Social care?

I worked as a domiciliary carer for three years, and honestly, it was the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I never really realised the impact it has on others – sometimes you might be the only person they see that day, and to be able to go and see them, put a smile on their face and leave them feeling comfortable and cared for is a privilege.

What made you join the HTP family?

I studied at HTP myself – both on a full-time course, and also as an apprentice, and I always loved the learning environment. It was different to anything I’d ever experienced before. When an opportunity came up to join as a Health & Social care tutor, I just had to apply. It was my opportunity to help others to get inspired and achieve their goals.

What was school like for you?

Truthfully? School wasn’t great for me. I ended up having some bad experiences. I enjoyed more practical and hands on activities, and for me, school didn’t enable that. I was easily distracted, and my teachers told me I wouldn’t amount to much. In a weird way, this inspired me to achieve my goals and prove them wrong. I left school with the GCSE’s I needed to go to college, so all in all, I guess it wasn’t that bad after all.

Who inspires you?

There’s been many people that have inspired me over the years, but I think my Mum has got to be my biggest inspiration. She inspires me every day, but I really admire the fact that she left school with hardly any grades and worked hard to do well for herself. This has taught me never to shy away from a challenge and that if you want something bad enough, you have to go and get it.

Tell us a bit more about the course you teach

I teach the Level 1 and Level 2 Health and Social Care programmes at HTP. The courses are great as an insight into the health and social care industry, such as job roles, care values, rights and responsibilities, working with disabilities, dementia and much more. The courses include assignments and practical work experience within a real business.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?

Someone once told me ‘do what you love, not what you’re told to love’. I really believe that – and I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love every day. Doing what you love also means you’re generally more positive, and that rubs off on others, too.

Tell us about a day in the life of your role at HTP

I feel like everyone says this – but it’s true that no two days are the same, apart from the fact that every day is fast paced!

I’ve been here for nearly a year now, and I still learn something new on a daily basis. I love that about my job. I spend a lot of time planning my lessons and giving feedback to my students – one of the most rewarding parts of my job is when they hand in a piece of work and I can see how far they’ve come. I spend a lot of time being a ‘role model’ for the young people I work with. They know they can talk to me about their course, but also about life in general. It makes it all worthwhile when you stop and realise the difference you make to someone’s life. That’s what it’s all about!
