SALLYANNE FARLEY: HORSE CARE & RIDING
SALLYANNE’S STORYOUR HORSECARE QUALIFICATIONS

“I think my students know how much I love horses, and that really comes across in the way i teach.”

How did you get involved with Horse Care & Riding HTP Apprenticeship College?

I joined the HTP family 13 years ago, and during that time, I’ve worked in a variety of roles, and have had the opportunity to develop myself along the way. A few years ago, I moved to our business development team, where my role involves working with employers across the Island.

My passion has always been horses, so I was delighted last year, when together with the Island Riding Centre, we launched our Horse care and Riding programme. It was a great opportunity for me to utilise my skills and experience of the sector to help develop a programme on the Island for young people interested in a career in Horse Care.

Why does this subject suit you so well?

School was good for me. I loved it, and I really enjoyed learning, but I’m not a good listener and I get bored easily, so I chose to study subjects that were more practical. Over the years, I’ve continued studying, and I’ve come to realise that you are never too old to learn something new.

What do students do and learn on your course?

Our Horse Care & Riding course covers both horsemanship on the ground and in the saddle. You learn about breeds, colours, markings, and the usual behaviours of the different breeds. It also covers looking after a horse, including the stable, and field maintenance as well as diseases and emergency treatments. You’ll also learn about shoeing, dentists, vet, and chiropractor visits, as well as the option to learn riding elements.

A final thought?

I love horses because I believe that we can learn so much from them. They teach us the importance of kindness, being calm and gentle, and total trust. It’s amazing to see students discover that this therapeutic side of equestrianism can help their own self-confidence and wellbeing.
