Meet the Tutors: Fran Clayden

Fran Clayden – Sport & Fitness Instructor at HTP Apprenticeship College

“My students are great. They want to be here and they’re passionate about fitness.”

I’m a fitness freak and I do long distance running in my spare time. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher – my parents are both teachers – so I wanted to do what I love, as well as to help people. I joined HTP in September 2020.

I was a full time personal trainer, running my own business. I did a BA Honours degree in Sports Coaching and Development at Southampton University and I’ve been working in fitness since I graduated. I’m 28 now.

We do a lot of practical work and it’s a great split because my Level 3 group get to instruct my Level 2 students, which gives them a feel for working with a client. We do theory too, learning about the exercises before implementing them in the gym. There’s more theory than you might think. You’re learning about the body – the muscles, the bones, the heart.

This course is great for practical learners, anyone who wants to better themselves, with an interest in fitness and exercise.
