Take your career to the next level with a professional Apprenticeship qualification

By learning valuable new skills and knowledge, and a professional qualification under your belt, you could really progress your career. Apprenticeships have changed – no longer just for young career-starters, Apprenticeships are a viable way for staff at Portsmouth City Council to progress your career.

What exactly is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a way to combine work, training and study, letting you ‘earn while you learn’.
Taking from 12 to 24 months, depending on the level, it is comprised of:

  • A nationally recognised Apprenticeship Standard, some of which include specific vocational qualifications.
  • Functional Skills: Maths and English (if required)

Level 3 (Advanced) and Level 5 (Higher) Apprenticeships are available through HTP, depending on your existing skills and qualifications..

General information about Apprenticeships

Will I have to pay for it, like a student loan?

No, there are no student fees – your training costs are paid by PCC.

Do I have to go to college, like day-release?

Not necessarily. Unlike with many other Apprenticeship providers, our highly qualified and industry competent Training Consultants come to the workplace or teach online the required skills and knowledge for the Apprenticeship, which contributes towards the 20% Off-the-Job Training requirement.  We run regular drop-in sessions too at the Trust, where you can get additional help and support or meet other learners. You also have access to HTP Apprenticeship College’s high quality online resources, and you (and your manager) will be fully supported at all times.

Off-Job Training (OJT) is an essential and valuable part of all Apprenticeships, providing new skills and knowledge. Off-Job Training activities can include:

  • Being taught how to do something new,
  • Undertake e-learning,
  • Mentoring / Shadowing,
  • Working towards the knowledge requirements of the Apprenticeship such as assignment writing,
  • Industry visits / Lectures.

Our job is to plan and monitor the number of required OJT hours.
