Lead Adult Care Workers support adults with care and support needs to achieve their personal goals and live as safely and independently as possible.

On the Adult Care Pathway, the focus is on person-centred care in adult social care settings. This may include supporting people with physical, practical, social, emotional or intellectual challenges, while promoting dignity, choice, independence and wellbeing.

You will also learn how to support colleagues, contribute to care planning, work within legal and professional responsibilities, and help maintain safe, compassionate and effective care.

Typical roles may include:

• Care Supervisor
• Supervising Care Worker
• Senior Support Worker
• Relief Team Leader
• Care Officer
• Community Support Worker
• Outreach Support Worker
• Personal Assistant working at senior level
• Social Work Assistant
• Social Services Officer

You may also develop specialist knowledge in areas such as learning disability, mental health, dementia care, domiciliary care, residential care or end-of-life care.

What subjects will I study?

During your apprenticeship you will develop knowledge and skills in areas including:

• supporting adults according to their care or support plan
• promoting independence, dignity and choice
• communication with individuals, families, carers and professionals
• safeguarding and responding to concerns
• person-centred risk assessment
• health, safety and wellbeing
• supporting eating, drinking, mobility and personal care
• recognising and responding to changes in needs
• working within professional boundaries
• supporting colleagues and modelling good practice
• maintaining clear records and confidentiality
• contributing to care planning and review

You will learn how to take greater responsibility while continuing to put the needs, rights and preferences of the individual at the centre of care.

What does the Diploma include?

The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is made up of mandatory and optional units. The mandatory units cover core adult care knowledge and practice, including:

• communication
• personal development
• values and behaviours
• health and wellbeing
• responsibilities
• safeguarding

Optional units allow the qualification to be tailored to your workplace setting and role. For the Adult Care Pathway, this may include units linked to learning disability services, dementia care, end-of-life care, residential care, domiciliary care, leadership or other specialist areas relevant to your employer.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout your apprenticeship, your Apprenticeship Coach will provide assessment, feedback and support to help you complete your diploma and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the apprenticeship standard.

At the end of your training, you will complete an End Point Assessment. This includes:

• Situational Judgement Test
• Professional Discussion

You will need to complete the required diploma, meet the standards of the Care Certificate, and be ready to show how you apply your learning in real workplace situations.
