Lead Adult Care Workers are frontline staff who support adults with care and support needs to live as independently, safely and confidently as possible.

On the Healthcare Pathway, the focus is on applying adult care skills in settings where health and wellbeing are central to the role. This may include supporting adults with personal care, nutrition, mobility, communication, monitoring changes in health and wellbeing, following care plans and working safely within professional boundaries.

As you develop, you will also build the confidence to guide and support colleagues, contribute to care planning, promote dignity and choice, and help maintain high standards of care.

Which roles will the Apprenticeship prepare me for?

Typical roles may include:

• Senior Healthcare Assistant
• Senior Care Support Worker
• Care Supervisor
• Senior Support Worker
• Clinical Support Worker
• Team Leader
• Supervising Care Worker
• Personal Assistant working at senior level

Role titles vary between employers, but this pathway is designed for people taking on additional responsibility in adult care within a healthcare or clinical care context.

What subjects will I study?

During your apprenticeship you will develop knowledge and skills in areas including:

• supporting adults with care and support needs
• promoting dignity, choice and independence
• monitoring health and wellbeing
• supporting nutrition, hydration, mobility and personal care
• safeguarding adults from harm
• infection prevention and control
• communication with individuals, families, carers and professionals
• maintaining clear records and confidentiality
• working within professional boundaries
• supporting and guiding colleagues
• using care plans and risk assessments safely

You will learn how to work confidently within your own role while recognising when to seek support from colleagues, supervisors or clinical professionals.

What does the Diploma include?

The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is made up of mandatory and optional units. The mandatory units cover core adult care knowledge and practice, including:

• communication
• personal development
• values and behaviours
• health and wellbeing
• responsibilities
• safeguarding

Optional units allow the qualification to be tailored to your workplace setting and role. For the Healthcare Pathway, this may include units linked to healthcare support, health and wellbeing, dementia care, end-of-life care, infection prevention, personal care or other specialist areas relevant to your employer.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout your apprenticeship, your Apprenticeship Coach will provide assessment, feedback and support to help you complete your diploma and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the apprenticeship standard.

At the end of your training, you will complete an End Point Assessment. This includes:

• Situational Judgement Test
• Professional Discussion

You will need to complete the required diploma, meet the standards of the Care Certificate, and be ready to show how you apply your learning in real workplace situations.
