If you already work in education and want to take your role to the next level, this advanced Apprenticeship will help you specialise in supporting children and young people with more complex needs. You’ll develop the skills to make a real difference to learners who may have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), social or emotional challenges, or who need targeted help to access the curriculum.

As a Specialist Teaching Assistant, you’ll support learners across all ages and abilities. You’ll learn how to plan and deliver effective interventions, contribute to assessment and review processes, and work closely with teaching staff and other professionals to support pupil progress and wellbeing. The qualification is designed to help you lead on specific areas of support and take greater responsibility in your setting.

This Apprenticeship includes three specialist routes—SEND, social and emotional wellbeing, and curriculum provision—so you can focus your training around the needs of your learners and your own professional goals. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of how to support inclusion, reduce barriers to learning, and promote positive outcomes for pupils.

What will I learn?

You’ll build on your existing experience and develop expert knowledge in your chosen specialist area. You’ll learn how to tailor support strategies to meet individual needs, deliver planned interventions, and promote pupil engagement and independence. You’ll also explore safeguarding, behaviour support, mental health awareness, and inclusive practices.

The programme includes professional development in areas such as working with parents and carers, collaborating with external services, and leading or mentoring others in your team. Everything you learn will be directly applied in your current role, allowing you to make an impact in your workplace as you train.

How will I train?

This is a work-based programme, so you’ll be learning while you work. You’ll receive regular visits and support from your HTP Apprenticeship Coach, who will guide you through the apprenticeship. You’ll complete online learning, attend tutorials and review meetings, and build a portfolio of evidence. Training is tailored around your job role, so you’ll be able to apply what you’re learning in real time.

How long does it take?

The apprenticeship typically takes around 24 months to complete. This includes time for training, skills development, and preparation for your End-Point Assessment.

What qualifications will I achieve?

You will achieve the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard.

If you don’t already have Level 2 English and maths, you’ll need to achieve this as part of your apprenticeship. We’ll support you every step of the way.

What does the assessment involve?

When you’ve completed your training and your employer agrees you’re ready, you’ll complete your End-Point Assessment. This is your chance to showcase the skills, knowledge, and behaviours you’ve developed. It typically includes a project and a professional discussion with an independent assessor. We’ll help you prepare and make sure you feel confident.
