Overview

This qualification is aimed at individuals wanting to pursue a career in the sport, health and wellness in the health, fitness and active leisure sectors. This qualification will suit individuals, especially school leavers who want to become fitness instructors and/or health/wellness advisers. It is suitable for those considering employment/self-employment in different settings: health and fitness clubs and the wider community.
What would I do on this course?

You will learn about, and undertake, a wide variety of activities in a series of units, including:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Principles of working in an exercise environment, including customer service and how to maintain health, safety and welfare
  • How to communicate with clients effectively and motivate clients to follow an exercise programme
  • Employment law, industry-specific legislation and procedures that apply to their jobs
  • The subsectors that make up the active leisure and learning sector
  • Understanding the principles of customer service
  • How to promote the health benefits of physical activity
  • Understanding mental health conditions and support opportunities
  • How to engage inactive people in regular physical activity
  • How to identify and create opportunities for participation in sport, physical activity or wellbeing programme within the community
  • Understanding the benefits of a balanced diet and its contribution to a healthy lifestyle
  • How to plan and prepare individual and or group exercise sessions
  • How to programme a variety of safe and effective exercise sessions for a range of clients
  • How to instruct a variety of exercise sessions with children and or adults

 

Assessment for the qualification is by the following methods:

  • Multiple-choice examination
  • Worksheets
  • Observation
  • Practical examination
  • Presentation
Would I always be in the classroom?

Many people think this course is just about being in the gym. Well in fact, although we use the gym for the practical aspects of the course there is a great deal of theory that we have to cover too. The work experience part of the course will be with a local gym you will be able to see for real the skills and knowledge you are learning.
